Removal hint and tips
Parking/access issues: Check to see if there is restricted parking i.e. yellow lines/red route/or residents permit parking. Customers with drives should check that the road is free of obstruction, protruding bushes and and overhanging tree branches. Please also warn us of small doors, tiny corridors or spiral staircases. This will ensure that loading is within normal timescales. Note: the customer is required to negotiate parking with the relevant authority prior to the removal date.
A map showing your new address and a contact telephone number is always helpful. Book your removal as soon as you can confirm dates and times.
Packing Tips: Unless we pack for you, keep the following supplies handy: Boxes, marking pen, bubble wrap and newspaper. Use strong boxes and containers that can be secured tightly. Purchase special boxes for dishes, wardrobe and other special items. Pack audio-video equipment in their original boxes if available. Avoid over-loading the box. If you cannot lift the box when full, we will also struggle. Label each box and indicate the following: (a) which room it should go in (b) whether it is fragile (c) if it should be loaded last so it will be unloaded first. Cushion contents with sufficient packing material such as bubble wrap, newspaper or tissue to avoid damage. Save room by using towels and blankets to wrap fragile items. Pack books tightly on end in small boxes. Carry all small and personal valuables with you.
Flat pack/ system furniture: Manufacturers claim that this type of furniture can be dismantled and re-assembled at will. In practice, it never goes together again in quite the same way as new. So this eventuality is not covered by our insurance. It is possible to move complete, but joints may loosen.
Preparing for moving day: Start running down freezer compartments. Book mains services for disconnections. Set date to cancel all rental agreements milkman/papers etc. Notify doctor, dentist, optician, vet. Inform telephone company. Ask the Post Office to re-route mail. Tell TV license, car registration, passport offices. Make local map to new house for friends and moving company. Clear the loft. Uproot and pot your favourite plants. Organise parking at new home. Plan where things go in new home. Book removal company, cleaners and gardeners if required. Arrange carpet fitters for different time than removal company.
Just before moving day: Empty drawers and tape them up, wardrobe/cabinet doors also. Avoid over-filling boxes and bags. Move boxes and bags to central location. Make sure drive/access route is cleared of overhanging branches and protruding hedges are cut back. Work out where you want your possessions in the new home - drawing a plan is helpful. Make sure someone is at the new house to show where things go. Flats. We will need a key and a door code if warden controlled. You will need priority for the lift. If the lift is small (or non-existent) warn us in advance - do not leave it until the van arrives.
Spare key: It happens all the time - the van is at the new house before the owner. Waiting time will cost more so, if possible, give us, or someone on site, a key beforehand.
On moving day: Try to have children and pets looked after by relatives or neighbours - you will have enough to do without worrying about what they are up to. Before you leave the house, check the rooms to make sure nothing has been left behind, turn off mains services, take meter readings, secure windows and lock up.
